It's easy to fall into the trap of complaining about what we don't have, isn't it? The evening of October 5, 2023, made me realize the importance of being thankful for what we have rather than lamenting what we lack!
One evening, after presenting at the International conference in Dubai, I had an experience that entirely shifted my outlook toward life. My friends and I decided to explore the beautiful, skyscraper-filled city. After a long day of traveling and walking around, my newfound friend, Dr. Ali, and I were hungry. Dr. Ali took me to a nearby café and shared a falafel meal. As we ate and got to know each other better, a moment occurred that I will never forget. I asked Dr. Ali about his journey to becoming an exceptional researcher that he was. I sensed that behind his smile lay a story of resilience and grit. His response was more than just an explanation of his journey; it was an inspiration and a realization that left a lasting impact on me. Dr. Ali shared that he used to live in Afghanistan with his family. After a series of wars and conflicts in the region, he was forced to leave to continue his research and career as a professor. He had to stay away from his family and relocate without a clear direction. He moved to various places, including Russia and Kazakhstan, where he continued his research despite lacking resources, opportunities, and recognition. He had several moments where he wanted to give up and do something else for a living, but there was a driver in his life called science and research that didn't let him break. Driven by his passion, he kept publishing and working, hoping his talent would take him places. Eventually, Dr. Ali found hope in India, where his talent and research were valued. He began working with an Indian professor and started producing significant results. He referred to India as his actual "Motherland," a place that gave him hope, opportunities, and a sense of belonging. The people of India treated him like family, providing the support and care he needed.
Despite the limited opportunities and resources, being away from his family, and facing numerous hardships, Dr. Ali pursued his passion purely for the love of it. This made me question why we complain and feel dissatisfied despite having so much luxury and comfort. Dr. Ali's story taught me a profound lesson about gratitude and resilience. It reminded me that we often overlook our blessings and focus too much on what we lack. His unwavering determination and appreciation for the opportunities he found, even in the face of adversity, serve as a powerful reminder to be thankful for what we have and to strive forward with passion and dedication.
